I've decided to start this blog because of a book I saw yesterday. As I'm browsing Barnes & Nobles, I come across a new diet book called "Skinny Bitch". It was written by two women who claim they will give you a swift kick in the pants, no holds barred approach to losing weight. Sounds great right?
Now here is my problem with not only this one but every other diet book on the market: One of these bitches used to be an agent with Ford Modeling. The other bitch used to be a model. Really? Do you honestly think either one of these bitches know what it's like to have to realize that she no longer fits in "regular" sized clothes and now has to shop at "specialty" stores? Let's see. In an interview which can be found here they were asked this question and this is a direct quote from the article-
Question: Have either of you ever been overweight? Do you think that helps or hurts your ability to give advice?
Neither of us has ever been overweight. But we’ve both treated our bodies like human garbage cans for decades. We know what it’s like to be addicted to junk, and to not have any desire to eat healthy foods.
The answer would be NOT!!!! The only thing these bitches ever worried about as far as weight was wether or not they would blow away if a strong wind blew.
I'm sick of people writing books about how to lose weight and they have never been fat a day in their lives. I want a book from some 400 pound broad who lost 250 pounds without surgery and without starving herself or being totally miserable in the process. I also want no gimmicks, no prepackage meal crap, no "diet aids", and most important, I want it to be something that I can stick to that's not going to completely take over my life like a second full time job.
I mean, let's face it, anyone who is at least 50 pounds over weight and has struggled with their weight their whole life can tell you how to diet. I can write a book on the theory behind dieting. I know what to do. It's not as easy as just "eating right and exercise" as our skinny friends seem to think. That's the easy part. It's the 75% mental part that comes into play. The "well I'm already fat so what's a whole 1 pound bag of m&m's" or "I'm PMSing so I can eat that half a cheesecake in the fridge". If you're like me, you came from that "clean your plate/there are starving children in Africa" generation and can't leave food on your plate regardless of the fact that there is enough for half a football team.
So here is what I'm proposing: Starting on Monday, October 22, 2007, I'm going to start my weight loss program. It is going to consist of the following things at first because I don't want to shock my system.
1.) No sodas-Really this is going to kill me because I just love regular Coke. Cherry Coke is even better. I hate all diet drinks. They are just too sweet and they are worse for you than the regular sodas. They also make you fat and are loaded with chemicals that were not made by nature. Really, look it up.
2.) Chemical Free-Well as chemical free as possible which means organic produce, meats, dairy. Some of these things I already do because lets face it alot of these things they add to food are just not good for you. I'll give you an example. My sister is highly allergic to penicillin. For years she would break out in random rashes all over her body and found out from the doctor that it was hives. He did a whole gammit of tests and found out she was allergic to a whole slew of things she already knew she was allergic to. One night either her or my mom saw some news thing that showed chicken farmers and how they pump the chickens with penicillin to keep them "disease free". The next day, sis eats chicken in a restaurant, breaks out in hives, puts 2 and 2 together and now only eats organic free range meats. She eats fish in restaurants now. I could go into another whole gammit of how they pump the hormones in stuff and how that really messes you up but I won't.
3.) Drink water- This is really a no brainer and apparently I don't have one because I hardly ever drink water even though I know from personal experience that I could drink about 3 quarts of water a day and keep the exact lifestyle I'm living right now and still lose 1/2-2 pounds a week. Stupid, I know.
4.) Movement- I really try to do this but I have a tendency to slack major meaning I'll do really good for about a week and then quit for 3 weeks (my current cycle). So I will walk at least one hour four times a week. I also bought some roller blades and have been practicing in my hall way by holding the wall on either side while attempting not to break my neck. As soon as I feel confident that I won't break my neck, I'll be doing that as well. Incidently, I bought my kids roller blade for my son's birthday next month so I'm trying to get good enough to maybe make this a family activity to keep me more motivated.
5.) Smaller Portions- I know this wil be the hardest one but it really works. If i cook so that we have only what is for that meal and there are no leftovers, I can't eat large prtions. I cook the food and serve everyones plates by dividing the portions and there is none left. Human size portions too, not elephant size portions. I use recipes that give the servings per recipe and adjust it to the servings I need by adding or taking away. Some recipe websites do this for you and make it really simple. Allrecipes.com is one.
I know that this seems like a lot to get started on but it really isn't. I just want to lose weight and be healthy. I don't have unrealistic goals. I know I'll never be a sz 4, but I'd just really like to shop in the "regular" size stores again.
